Stewart, BC – Regional News & Economic Highlights (2026 Update)
KSM Project Receives Major Provincial Support
One of the most significant developments in the Golden Triangle this year is the advancement of the KSM (Kerr-Sulphurets-Mitchell) Project, located approximately 65 kilometres northwest of Stewart. Owned by Seabridge Gold, KSM is one of the largest undeveloped gold-copper projects in the world.
In 2026, the Province of British Columbia designated KSM as a Provincial Priority Project, providing enhanced government coordination to help move the project through permitting and development milestones. More recently, a BC Supreme Court decision upheld the Province’s determination that the project had been “substantially started,” preserving its environmental assessment approvals and removing a significant layer of uncertainty.
Impact: While KSM has not yet entered full construction, it is now arguably closer than ever to development. The project continues to attract industry attention and has the potential to generate thousands of construction and operating jobs, creating long-term demand for accommodation, food services, transportation, and regional support businesses throughout Stewart and the surrounding area.
Port Expansion Strengthens Stewart’s Strategic Importance
The acquisition and redevelopment of the Stewart Bulk Terminal, now operating as Portland Canal Transportation Limited Partnership, continues to position Stewart as a critical export gateway for northwestern British Columbia.
Supported by Indigenous development groups and major transportation partners, the port is expanding its role in handling mineral concentrates, project cargo, and industrial freight serving the Golden Triangle and northern resource sector.
Impact: As mining activity increases throughout the region, Stewart’s port infrastructure is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting supply chains, logistics operations, and future mine development. Demand for accommodation, dining, and commercial services is expected to benefit accordingly.
Red Chris Expansion and Regional Mining Activity
The Red Chris Mine continues its transition toward a large-scale underground block cave operation, representing one of the most significant mining investments currently underway in British Columbia.
At the same time, activity surrounding Eskay Creek’s redevelopment and ongoing exploration programs throughout the Golden Triangle continues to support employment, contracting opportunities, and increased regional traffic.
Impact: Mining personnel, contractors, consultants, and service providers continue to contribute to demand for lodging and hospitality services throughout the Stewart corridor. These projects represent both immediate economic activity and long-term growth potential for the region.
Tourism Continues to Grow Alongside Industry
Stewart remains one of British Columbia’s most unique destinations, attracting visitors seeking glacier viewing, wildlife encounters, fishing, backcountry recreation, and access to the spectacular landscapes of the Bear Glacier and Salmon Glacier.
Improved highway access, growing awareness of the region’s natural beauty, and increasing tourism promotion continue to strengthen Stewart’s appeal as a year-round destination.
Impact: The combination of resource-sector growth and tourism activity creates a diversified economic foundation that supports local businesses throughout the year.
